Bitcoin Is on a Three-Month Streak Not Seen Since 2012

Bitcoin is doing something it hasn’t done in 14 years.
After posting gains in both July and August, Bitcoin is currently on track to finish September higher as well. If that holds through the end of the month, it would mark the first time since 2012 that Bitcoin has recorded gains in July, August and September consecutively. That makes this one of the rarer statistical streaks in Bitcoin’s trading history — and an interesting reminder of just how much the Bitcoin market has changed since the last time it happened.
Three Months in the Green
According to CoinDesk data, Bitcoin gained 4.8% in July and 25.2% in August. September has continued the run, with Bitcoin up roughly 10.9% for the month and trading around $86,000 at the time of writing. The last time Bitcoin put together this particular July-August-September combination was 2012. Back then, the numbers were even wilder. Bitcoin gained 41% in July 2012, another 6.4% in August and 24.4% in September. And Bitcoin looked very different. There were no U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs. Institutional participation was tiny compared with today. The sophisticated futures, options and derivatives markets surrounding Bitcoin today barely existed. Bitcoin itself was trading for around $10. Fourteen years later, the same three-month streak has returned — but in a completely different market.
Remember When Bitcoin Was $10?
The 2012 comparison is fun partly because it highlights how far Bitcoin has come. Bitcoin was still a relatively obscure experiment. The market was small, liquidity was limited, and comparatively modest amounts of capital could have an enormous impact. Today, Bitcoin trades globally around the clock across major exchanges and sits alongside a substantial ecosystem of spot markets, futures, options, institutional trading desks and regulated investment products.
U.S.-listed spot Bitcoin ETFs have also created a regulated route for investors to gain exposure through traditional brokerage and investment infrastructure. In other words, the Bitcoin recording this streak in 2026 is a very different beast from the Bitcoin that did it in 2012.
A Rare Piece of Bitcoin History
There’s another reason the streak stands out: it has happened only once before. That makes it interesting Bitcoin trivia, but a sample size of one doesn’t establish a repeatable pattern. What happened after the 2012 streak is part of Bitcoin history, rather than a roadmap for what comes next. And that history was dramatic. October 2012 interrupted the three-month run, with Bitcoin declining 9.7% during the month. Bitcoin eventually reached a monthly low of $10.17 on October 26. From there, Bitcoin entered one of the defining periods of its early history, eventually reaching $230 in April 2013. It’s an extraordinary chapter — and also a reminder of just how small Bitcoin was at the time.
Bitcoin Has Grown Up
Perhaps the most interesting part of the 2012 comparison isn’t what happened afterward. It’s what has happened since. The Bitcoin of 2012 belonged largely to early adopters, developers, enthusiasts and a relatively small group of traders. The Bitcoin of 2026 operates inside a vastly larger global financial ecosystem, with institutional participation, regulated investment products and sophisticated markets built around it. Bitcoin has gone from an internet-native experiment trading around $10 to an asset trading above $80,000 — yet every so often, the charts still produce an echo from those early days. Fourteen years later, July, August and September are lining up green again. That doesn’t tell us what happens next. But it does make for one seriously good Bitcoin history lesson.
Why This Matters for Bitcoin:
Bitcoin’s first potential July-to-September winning streak since 2012 highlights both the rarity of the current run and the enormous transformation of the Bitcoin market over the past 14 years. The dates may look familiar, but the market surrounding Bitcoin today is almost unrecognizable compared with the one that existed the last time this happened.
